A French Grotto

The building of this limestone grotto and water basin was begun in the 14th century by the monks who tended the walled garden terraces for the local monastery’s kitchen. It was discovered after having been hidden for centuries. Sadly, the natural spring has dried up but when it does rain the grotto comes into a new life as the rain penetrates through the porous rock. There were hundreds of these basins dotted around so it is understandable that they were forgotten as the natural water supply stopped flowing. It was a fun challenge as it can be viewed from so many different angles and it needs to catch one’s eye on a moonlit night when climbing the terraces to go to bed.
